After researching all three genres we decided to use science fiction as the genre for our opening sequence. Horror and thriller are both good genres, they just do not fit well with our film. Our film involves time travel and is only allowed to be two minutes long. First off, time travel fits this best as it does relate to science but is unable to happen. That is why science fiction works well, but part of our decision was how the other genres would not work. Thriller films often have dark and dull lighting which would be very difficult to film as we do not have access to that kind of lighting. Also, the soundtracks for thriller films are musical, something we would be unable to recreate. Thrillers are often filmed in isolated places which is something we would be unable to have access to. For horror films, the props they use are weapons, which we would not be able to obtain for safety reasons. The editing in horror films is nearly impossible to do in just two minutes. For example, elliptical editing cuts, cutaways, and smash cuts. Lastly, the settings in horror films are often isolated and abandoned. For science fiction, the use of sound effects are different things we could definitely recreate. Also, the forms of editing for sci fi are something we could add to our film. These being quick cuts and color enhancement. Some sci fi films avoid too much editing, anyway. Since our film has two best friends who go back to the present from the past, the conventions of science fiction fit best. The conventions in science fiction can be recreated in the limited two minutes that we have. Ultimately, science fiction works better than horror and thriller. As well as, science fiction fits our film the best.
